Feels Like Home

From Peter:

Thursday April 28 at 3:41 PM HST - I had my first real 'home' moment.  I needed to get something out of Davis' room, I turned down the hall and realized that I wasn't heading for "the room where Davis is staying" but rather his room.  It was a mixture of feelings that came with this moment - was it odd that it had taken so long to feel completely settled or was it more strange that it happened at all.  What would it feel like to leave?  To return home?  Will I be ready to go at the end of the trip?  Lots of thoughts for me to ponder - fortunately, I've got the time...

Things I think about or have learned:

Playground or Beach - the toughest choice of the day for a 3 or 4 year old.  He's living a pretty charmed life.

Male Gecko - the best or worst job, depending on your take.  Turns out all of the geckos here are female - an interesting bit of evolutionary biology for sure.  They don't need a mate, they just 'decide' to reproduce and their eggs are clones.  This was helpful in populating the most remote land on the planet - one gecko floated her way here and now they are everywhere.  (The time limit on my "catch and release" policy is about to run out - instead of chasing them around with a tissue, I'm going to start chasing with a rolled up newspaper...)

Anemone fish - (think Nemo) Continuing in the biology theme, there aren't any anemone fish here in Hawaii.  The fish that are native all floated here as eggs and therefore need to have a lengthy "larval" stage.  The anemone fish has a very short larval stage so they never made it.

The phone company got it right - The first phone line on Maui connected our town, Haiku, to the neighboring town of Makawao.  (Quick aside, our favorite radio station broadcasts from Makawao, if they are streaming online, you should all check it out, plenty of Wham!, Gloria Estefan, Lionel Richie - here's a common occurrence in our car:  our favorite daytime DJ, "More music that you love, Ninety-four three, Mack-a-wow," followed immediately by Davis "Mack-a-WOW!!")  Back to the phone company - our local exchange is 575, it took Karin and I a while to make the connection so if you don't right away, that's ok...

You can out drive rain / we all learned this yesterday /  It was rainy here - (hint for above) so we headed across the island to the sun.  Thanks Aunt Jill for the mini-golf - Karin found a coupon so Davis payed for both of us!
Getting ready is easy here - even when you are going out for a fancy meal or getting dressed for Easter Brunch it seems to be a quick process when this is the bottom of your closet:
